William Benjamin was the fifth of six children of Amos Miesenhelder(1843-1909) and Virginia "Jennie" May Alexander (1857-1909). He usually went by Ben. Both of his parents died within two months of each other leaving the household to be held together by Jennie's mother Angeline Alexander who was also widowed in 1909. The four Miesenhelder brothers ran the grain mill that had been in the family for three generations and Ben was the bookkeeper. He also worked for while in Chicago for the Illinois Central Railroad as a clerk in the engineering department before returning to the mill in Palestine. In World War I he served in Illinois MM2 USNRF. He did not marry until age 30 when he joined with Mary Marcelyn Mayhue, daughter of Henry and Grace (Waters) Mayhue.
