Gary was born Jan. 3, 1944, in Rexburg, Idaho, the son of Lloyd William Powell and Kate Viola Keppner Powell. He grew up in the Egin Bench area, attending the old Edmunds school, graduating from Sugar-Salem High School. He also attended a technical college in Pocatello, where he learned to weld. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam.
He married JoAnn Marie Powell on May 7, 1971. They made their home in St. Anthony.
Gary worked as a welder at the INEL site for 38 years. He was a member of the Rexburg VFW and served as its vice commander. He enjoyed making quilts, embroidering and making decorative welding designs.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn of St. Anthony; two daughters, Latisha Denice (Clayne) Bloom of Sugar City and Natalee Ann (Jonathan) Davis of Parker, Idaho; three grandsons; and one granddaughter. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by twin infant grandsons.
