Mr. Berry was one of South Mississippi's outstanding citizens, was a veteran of the Civil War and an active church worker. He entered the Confederate army at the age of 19 and served under Charles Sears, Robert Durr and Captain Gallagher, receiving a promotion into official ranks under the later officer. He was married twice, Miss Bettie Magee being his first wife. Fourteen children were born to the couple, eleven of whom still survive. They are: A. C. Berry, of New Hebron; R. T. Berry, of Mendenhall; Mrs. J. H. Thurman, Mrs. Frank Berry, of Pinola; O. E. Berry, of Mt. Olive; N. V. Berry of New Hebron; M. E. and F. C. Berry, of Pinola; Mrs. C. P. Mullins, of Mendenhall; Mrs. J. A. McCaskill, of Pinola; Mrs. W. P. Walker, of Mendenhall.

After the death of his first wife in 1909, he married Mrs. Bettie Mahon. Surviving from this union is one step-child, Mrs. Henry Allred, of Vicksburg, and two adopted sons, Monroe and Henry Patterson, of Pinola.

Surviving are 79 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
