Emma was brought from Indiana to Toledo as an infant. She attended the local Toledo schools, and began teaching right after graduating from high school. She taught in Toledo at Jefferson and Warren Schools until resigning in 1887 to marry. She moved to Detroit with her husband, but following his death within six years of their marriage, she moved back to Toledo. In order to support her son, she pleaded with the local school officials for a job and was again given a teaching position. Emma retired at the age of 70 in 1930, most of her 46-year career spent as principal of Warren School in Toledo. She moved to Los Angeles in 1931, returning home to Toledo in 1955 a few months prior to her death.
