Grady Lindsey, 79, who had served as a Madison County official for a record twenty-seven years as tax assessor-collector, died at his home of an apparent heart attack September 4, 1974.
When Mr. Lindsey failed to come to his office early Monday morning as was his custom, his chief deputy, Mrs. Iola McLaran, called his brother, Joe Lindsey Sr., who went to his home and with Sheriff Richard Grall gained entry and found Mr. Lindsey sitting in his chair as if death had come quietly.
Funeral services for James Grady Lindsey were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 1974, at the Church of Christ on North Madison Street, Madisonville, with Mr. Lanier Stevens officiating. Burial was in the City Cemetery.

Mr. Lindsey lacked only seventeen days of observing his eightieth birthday, having been born November 21, 1894, in Madison County, to Zuella McDonald Lindsey and J.R. Lindsey.
He was Madison County tax-accessor-collector for 27 years as an elected official, but prior to that he had begun work in the Madison County Courthouse in 1941, as a deputy to the tax assessor collector's office for Casey Fannin, the then tax assessor collector.
Lindsey's tenure included two terms as tax assessor collector and sheriff during the time from 1952 through 1954 when in Texas, all counties with populations under ten thousand had to combine the offices of tax assessor-collector and sheriff. The late Trav Connor served then as chief sheriff's duputy and was elected sheriff when that law was repealed.
James Grady Lindsey was married to Miss Hallie Iona Bullard, Decemeber 6, 1916 in Madisonville. She preceded him in death in June 1963.
He had been a member of the Church of Christ at Madisonville for fifty-five years and led the singing for fifty-two years. He had also served the congregation as an elder for many years.
He is survived by one son, Max Lindsey of New Orleans, Louisiana; one granddaughter, Marla Evans of Huntsville; three brothers, Ruel Lindsey of Madisonville, Joe Lindsey of Madisonville, Reed Lindsey of Huntsville; and one sister, Mrs. Alvin Harris of Pasadena.
Pallbearers were Joe Lindsey Jr., Lunn Evans, Dewitte Lindsey, James Goodrum, E.A. Wilson Jr., Don Dean, Tommy Shine and Joe Drew, J.M. Day. Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
