MURTAUGH - Esther (Tessa) Smith Tolman, 65 year old former Murtaugh resident died Thursday, January 28, 1971, at the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah, of natural causes. She was born December 5, 1905, in Marion, Idaho, the daughter of Adam and Esther Jones Smith. She attended the Albion State Normal College. She married Cyrus Henry Tolman on May 1, 1928, in Marion. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls L.D.S. Temple. She taught school in Oakley, Murtaugh, and Hansen, Idaho. She was an active Red Cross Volunteer and a former Times News correspondent in Twin Falls. She was an active member of the L.D.S. Church. She had served as YWMIA and Primary President in Murtaugh, worked in the Sunday School and Relief Society, received a twenty year service pin in the Primary, and had served in many other capacities. She had lived in Denver, Colorado, Twin Falls and Cassia Counties, and in 1967, she moved to Springville, Utah, where she resided until her death.
Survivors include a son, A. Richard Tolman of Temple View, New Zealand; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Oril - Margaret) Sawyer of Springville, Utah, Mrs. Lynn (Joan Lorraine) Garder of Allen Town, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Ray (Tammra Louise) Strawn of Alameda, California; two brothers, Mr. A. G. Smith of Pocatello, and Lyman J. Smith of Sacramento, California; a sister, Mrs. Hermoine Horton of Pocatello; and nineteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 9, 1970.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 1, 1971, at the Murtaugh L.D.S. Ward Chapel, with Bishop Roger Tolman, officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Cemetery near Oakley. Friends may call at the Payne Mortuary, 221 West Main Street in Burley Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to the funeral on Monday.
