Florence and her husband lived in the Kanab area for nearly ten years while her husband worked at logging and sawmilling on Kaibab Mountain and Hatch. In 1938, Florence and her family moved to St. George where they remained for many years.
Following an accident that left her husband partially disabled, Florence worked in several St. George businesses, including J. C. Penny at the original location at 100 North Main Street. She retired in the early 1970's, continuing to live in St. George until the death of her husband in 1981. She then moved to Fredonia and then Kanab to be near family. During the last few years of her life she lived in Hurricane with her son, Rodney and his family.
Two of the remarkable things about Florence's life were her attachment to her family and her faith. She served faithfully for many years in th LDS Primary and Relief Society organizations, and was a faithful visiting teacher as long as her health permitted. During her time in Kanab she served for several years in the Kanab Hospital Auxilary Thrift Shop with her daugther, Mary Elveen.
She is survived by her dauther Mary Elveen (Howard) Gallamore of Hillsboro, Oregon, her sons Rodney (Lois) Nelson of Hurricane and Hyrum Nelson of Crosby, North Dakota, her sister Edna Synder of Phoenix, Arizona, five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband George Smith Nelson, her oldest son George W. Nelson, an infant daughter Velma, a grandson Dale Gallamore, and siblings LeRoy Mortenson, Emile Mortenson, Ida Nelson and Lora Nelson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 4, at 11:00 AM in the Hurricane Stake Center, 677 South 700 West, Hurricane, with a viewming from 10:00-10:45 AM at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the St. George Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Gregg Last, and the staff of Southern Utah Home Care and Hospice for the tender care they have given over the last two years, especially Heather and Tacy.
