Willard F. Grossell

Willard F. Grossell, Sr., 78, of Deer River, Minn., died Feb. 4, 2004, at his home. Willard was born August 25, 1925 to Carl and Mary (Sutter) Grossell at home in Morse Township, Minn., where he was raised. He attended schools in Deer River graduating in 1943. He worked on the family farm and farming in N.D. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during WW II serving as an Aviation Ordinanceman 3/C where he taught aviation gunnery techniques to naval combat aircrews. On Aug. 22, 1945 he married Edith Olson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, Minn. Following discharge from the Navy in Dec. of 1945 he settled in Deer River where he has resided since. He was employed at various jobs, at times as many as three at one time, including Iron Mining, Itasca County Road crew, Deer River Apco Service Station, State Hwy Dept, Star Route mail carrier, Milo Aakhus Skelly Service in Effie, Truckhaven Truckstop in Deer River, the Lyceum Theater in Deer River, Hawkinson Construction of Grand Rapids, and finally Blandin Paper Co. from which he retired in 1987. After retirement he worked two years on state campground maintenance. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Deer River where he served as Eucharistic Minister, Religious Education Teacher, Parish Council member and lector. He was a member of the USAF Ground Observer Corps and a member of the Association of Retarded Children and also a member of the Transplant Association of America. As hobbies, Willard loved to play guitar and sing, especially with his family, tinker with tractors and motor vehicles, invent things, farming, and gardening, camping, fishing and car trips with Edith. He was preceded by parents; wife, Edith; two sisters, Molly Box Martin, and Lillian Cartwright; four Brothers, Roman, Carl, Joseph, and John; a great granddaughter Holly Etter and a great grandson John Moore Jr. Survived by five sons, Willard Jr. (Elaine), Stephen (Peggy), James (Jeanne), Jerome (Theresa) all of Deer River and Matthew Sr. (Amy) of Bagley, Minn.; nine daughters, Cheryl (Victor) Williams of Deer River, Susan (Dale Sr.) Etter of Talmoon, Rosemary (Greig Sr.) Olson, Grace (Boots) Rasley, Yvonne (James) Daigle, and Marcia Grossell of Deer River, Teresa (Jeff) Huju of Marcell, Edith (Frank) Hellmann of Deer River, and Mary Grossell of Grand Rapids, Minn.43 Grandchildren and 38 Great Grandchildren, and one sister Marion Figgins of Grand Rapids, Minn. VISITATION:4-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, with a rosary recitation at 7:30 p.m., at Carroll Funeral Home. Funeral mass on Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Deer River. Burial with Military Honors accorded by VFW Post 2720 and A.L. Post 122 of Deer River will be in Olivet Cemetery, Morse Twp., MN.
