The son of James & Susan (Grim) Gemmill, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Fawn Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Baltimore, Maryland, January 30, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. E, 1st Maryland Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 2, 1865.

He married Sarah Rebecca Perago December 20, 1866, and fathered John Scott (b. 03/05/67), William Harvey (b. 07/14/69), Henry Jacob "Harry" (b. 05/07/72), Clarence Franklin (b. 10/19/81), Lillian Pearl (b. 10/06/83 - married Miles Victor Minnich), and daughter (b./d. 02/25/87). He was found dead from apparent "paralysis."
