Esther Nims was born December 18th, 1737, in Deerfield, MA, eldest daughter of John Nims and Abigail Smead. Her mother died in 1755 when Esther was 18. Esther was married June 5th, 1760 in Deerfield to Sylvanus Rice. His father Moses Rice had also died in 1755, killed by Indians while plowing his field.
Esther moved to Charlemont with her husband whose family had already been living there. They had 8 children: Luther born 1761, Calvin born 1763, Abigail born 1765, Huldah born 1767, Sylvanus born 1769, Quartus born 1773, Alfred born 1775, and Matthew Rice born 1778.
Esther's huband Sylvanus was a Revolutionary War patriot and was the captain of a company of minutemen in Charlemont. His company marched in response to the alarm of April 19th, 1775, a date made famous by the story of "Paul Revere's Ride".
Esther and Sylvanus's oldest son Luther also served during the Revolution and was killed in 1782 when the British stormed West Point. The youngest son Matthew died at age 26 in Montreal, Canada in 1804. Esther's husband died in 1819 in Charlemont at the age of 90 years. Esther lived five years longer and died September 28, 1824 at the age of 86. They had lived within the town of Charlemont and are probably buried at the old village cemetery there.
