Died Thursday, March 12, 1987, at his residence in Pineville. He was 64, a native of Liberty, Miss. He was retired principal of M.D. Haynes School. Religious services at First Baptist Church, Pineville, 3 p.m. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Bryant Dean and the Rev. B.G. Dyess. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Alexandria.

Survived by wife, Mrs. Havard George Bates, Pineville; two sons, Dr. Charles Stuart Bates and Carl Cheney Bates, both of Pineville; a daughter, Pamela B. Whittekin, Mazatlon, Mexico; three brothers, Dr. Carl E. Bates, Hendersonville, N.C., David C. Bates Sr., Pineville, and Hilton E. Bates, Baton Rouge; a sister, Mildred B. Day, Baton Rouge; step-mother, Mrs. Lesia M. Bates, Natchez, Miss.; a step-brother, Jessie West, Natchez, Miss.; and three grandchildren, William, Laura and Lesia Whittekin, all of Plano, Texas.

He was past business administrator of Broadmoor Baptist Church, Shreveport, for 13 years, and was a member of First Baptist Church, Pineville. Memorial donations may be made to Louisiana College Scholarship Fund or Rapides Parish Special Olympics. Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Pineville, in charge of arrangements.
