Martha "Patsy" Caroline Lewis was born to Samuel H. Lewis and Charlotte Fowler in 1845 in Gallatin County, Illinois. Her father, Samuel H. Lewis, was born around 1815 in North Carolina. He first married Anna W. Trousdale, daughter of Alexander Trousdale (FG # 43471686) and his second wife Edith Pearce (FG # 43472442) on January 26, 1835 in White County, Illinois. His second wife was Charlotte Fowler on July 26, 1841 in Gallatin County, Illinois. From this marriage they had the following children: David W Lewis (born 1843), Patsy Caroline Lewis (born 1845), Sarah L. Lewis (born 1848), and Ollie C. Lewis (born 1851). Patsy's family lived at Bear Creek, Gallatin County, Illinois according to the 1850 census. Samuel Lewis died between 1851 and 1858. His widow Charlotte remarried to James Bruce on July 12, 1858 in Saline County, Illinois. Patsy and her siblings David, Sarah and Ollie lived with the Bruce family at Equality, Gallatin County, Illinois according to the 1860 census. Patsy married William Henry Tarrant on November 8, 1865 in Gallatin County, Illinois.
