Civil War Veteran - Willis Ball Enlisted October 21, 1861, at Manchester, New Hampshire and mustered in as Private December 20, 1861, into Company H, 8th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry (Union). Appointed Corporal September 6, 1862. Regiment left State for Boston, Mass., January 24, 1862; thence sailed for Ship Island, Miss., February 15, arriving there March 15, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant January 1, 1864. Re-enlisted and mustered January 4, 1864. Battles, Skirmishes and Engagements: Battle of Georgia Landing. Expedition to Bayou Teche. Red River Campaign; Skirmish at Bayou De Paul (Carroll's Mill), near Pleasant Hill and Engagement at Sabine Cross-Roads. Prisoner of War: April 8, 1864, at Sabine Cross Roads, Louisiana. Paroled October 23, 1864. Regiment ordered to Vidalia, Louisiana and performed Garrison, guard and patrol duty there till March 6, 1865. Provost duty at Natchez till October. Ordered to Vicksburg, Miss., and there transferred into Company C, 2nd Regiment, New Hampshire Cavalry (Union) on January 1, 1865. Mustered out October 28, 1865, at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Filed for Invalid Pension on April 21, 1890.
