William G. Barney, 70, Grand Forks, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in Tri-County Nursing Home, Hatton, N.D.
William George Barney was born June 4, 1922, the son of William and M. May (Brunskill) Barney, in Cando, N.D. They moved to Grand Forks in 1929, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He graduated from UND in 1943, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He joined the U.S. Army Feb. 11, 1944, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater until April 27, 1946. He married Ruth Renwick on Oct. 25, 1947 in St. Paul. He began teaching mechanical engineering at UND in September 1946. He retired in 1986 as professor of mechanical engineering. He was involved with energy research at UND, and worked part-time as a results engineer for Northern States Power, Grand Forks.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Barbara (Don) Mann, Kalispell, Mont., Diane (Parker) Wellington, Sutton, Mass., and Kimberly (Randy) Kieffer, Grand Forks; a son, Michael (Mitzi), Glendive, Mont. 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Kirby, Dickinson, N.D.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery.
Military rites: American Legion Post 157 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 East Grand Forks.
