Verda Louise Simmons, 85, of Avinger, formerly of Paris, passed from this life Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at Dubuis Hospital.

Funeral services are to be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, in the chapel of Starrett Funeral Home with Pastor James McLeod and Pastor Erwin Gould officiating. Interment follows in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family receives friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

She was born Oct. 18, 1924, in Titus County, a daughter of Jim and Ruby Lee Key Winkles. She had worked as an LVN, and then retired from her family business, the Northeast Texas Truck Plaza, where she was co-owner, operator and manager. She was a member of the Lamar Avenue Church of Christ while living in Paris.

She married Ernest Lemuel Simmons April 12, 1941, in Rockwall County. He preceded her in death Feb. 2, 1993.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Verda Renee Simmons Walker in 1998; 10 brothers and sisters; and her parents.

She is survived by her children, Ernest Kenneth Simmons and wife, Cherie, of Canton, Phillip Ray Simmons and wife, Donna Kay, of Jonesboro, Ark., Carol Louise Simmons Turner and husband, Richard, of Avinger, Ernestine Simmons Connot and husband, Dean, of Blossom, and John Paul Simmons and wife, Jean, of High Rolls, N.M.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren.

Named to serve as pallbearers are her grandsons Phillip Ray Simmons Jr., Ernest Kenneth Simmons Jr., James Matthew Patterson, John Clinton Simmons, Brandon Cochran and Willis Langley.

Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
