Charles was the son of Allen and Caroline (Fowler) Beckwith. He moved to Orleans County, New York after 1831. He wed Miss Emily Minerva Kuck on June 26, 1845 and they settled into farming in the town of Carlton. Five sons were born to the couple before Emily's death in 1861.

By 1865 Charles married Miss Harriet Newell Fuller and they had a son together. Harriet died a day after the infant's birth.

By 1875 Charles married his third and final wife Miss Charlotte Matilda Grow. They moved to Gaines and settled on a farm there.
