A VETERAN AT REST
Madden J. Parker died at his home on Central avenue last Saturday night at 9:30 o'clock after a year's sickness from complicated causes brought on by old age. He was 85 years old. Iowa was his native state, where he lived until twenty-four years ago when he and his family came to Kansas. For ten years he has been a resident of Emporia. Madden Parker is a veteran of the Civil war in which he saw long and hard services. At the beginning of the war he enlisted in the First Iowa volunteer battery. A year later he was taken sick and sent home. Upon recovering he returned to his company late in 1862 and until the end of the strife he was a true upholder of the stars and stripes.
Before coming to Kansas he married Mary Ault, who with their seven children survive him. The children are Henry, of Pittsburg, Kansas; Mrs. Louise Hull, of this town; Adolph Huston, of Fort Scott, Kansas; Ella, Harry and Mrs. Lizzie Hopkins. All the children excepting Henry and Huston are at the family home on Central avenue. The funeral took place at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the house and were conducted by the Emporia post of the G.A.R. Rev. Selden, of the Baptist church officiated. The interment which was made in Maplewood cemetery, laid to rest one more veteran from the fading ranks of Grand Army of the Republic.
