Robert William Barnhill
Robert William Barnhill : Robert passed away Tuesday morning at his home in Oskaloosa at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 4 days.

Survivors include his loving wife, Jean of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Jane (Wayne) Monroe of Ottumwa; sons: Robert Barnhill of Houston, TX; and Jim (Heidi) Barnhill of Deerfield, WI; grandchildren: Jennifer Livingston, Peter Barnhill, Kerry Monroe, Colin Monroe, Eliza Stolte and Liam Barnhill; five great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert William Barnhill, son of Fred Emerson and Wilhelmina Marie Stommel Barnhill, was born April 23, 1925 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. January 18, 1943, while attending his senior year at Oskaloosa High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a radioman in the U.S. Naval Armed Guard; where he served 28 months of sea duty on five different ships, earning several campaign ribbons and the Bronze Star from the Normandy Beach Invasion in 1944. Robert was discharged April 27, 1946. While in the navy, he married Betty Elledge. They had three children: Robert W. (Jr.), Jane and Jim, they later divorced.

Robert worked on the M & St. L Railroad; later he owned and operated Barnhill Plumbing and Heating for many years, where he worked as a plumbing contractor. January 30, 1969, Robert
married Phyllis Jean Tandy in Ft. Myers, FL. Together, they operated Jean's A&W Restaurant.
After Robert's retirement in 1980, they traveled and wintered in Lanark Village, FL. They were members of the Lanark Village Community Church and active in many activities. They lived in Florida 18 years, before returning to Oskaloosa in 2004.

Robert was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. He was a commodore at the Lanark Village Boat Club and oversaw many improvement projects. Robert enjoyed helping others whenever he could.

Besides his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Sprague and brother, Fred Barnhill.
