John was a member of the Neville High Class of 1957 in Monroe LA, where he played basketball. He majored in Health and Physical Education at Northeast Louisiana State College, where he played basketball his freshman year and ran track, graduating in Class of 1961 (now named University of Louisiana at Monroe). For high school and college in Monroe he commuted 15 miles from Sterlington. He received a Masters Degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, class of 1964. He retired from teaching and coaching at Parkway Schools. He had earlier taught several years at Home Height Elementary School and Ritenour Schools in St. Louis.

While at Northeast, Johnny met his wife Myra Franklin, they were married on April 15, 1960 in the Dean Baptist Church, Union Parish, LA. There are three children and five grandchildren. He is missed by all who knew him.
