Stephen Chipley a highly respectable and worthy citizen father of Dr. Wm. S. Chipley resided on this street for a number of years he was a member of the City Council and Mayor of the City. Corner of Church Street and Main Cross was the last residence of Rev. Mr. Chipley, and subsequently of his son Dr. W.S. Chipley, the spot is now occupied by the new and elegant Methodist Church called the Centennary Methodist Church.
