George King, born in Germany, enlisted in Company G, 188th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, toward the end the Civil War for a 1-year term of service, Jan. 26, 1865. He was mustered out Sept 21, 1865 after the war's end with the rank of Sergeant. He and his wife, Mary E. (nee Hubbard), raised a son and a daughter while supporting his family working as a barber. On May 14, 1890, he applied for a soldier's invalid pension which was approved and issued as Certificate #981259. At the time of his death from a cerebral hemorrhage, July 9, 1921, his family resided at 3146 W. 46th Street, Cleveland. Mary applied for a soldier's widow's pension July 18, 1921, which she drew until her death, July 25, 1937.

George's name is on the panel honoring his comrades-in-arms of the 188th Ohio Infantry in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. He had been a member of the Brooklyn Post #368, Grand Army of the Republic, Cleveland, Ohio.
