CLARION DEMOCRAT, 8/29/1878
Mr. Samuel Shaner, an old and respected citizen of Salem township died on Thursday, the 15th inst., aged 72 years.

----------

Samuel farmed but was also a blacksmith. He taught his trade to the younger brother Jeremiah. Samuel is said to have supplied the hardware that was needed for the First Salem Lutheran Church, Lamartine (Clarion County), which was built almost entirely by the members of the congregation, each contributing labor and materials. It was dedicated in 1838.

Like many of the German settlers, Samuel and his family were faithful Lutherans. They had family worship morning and evening. In the early days, the sermons were preached in German, but then the succeeding generations demanded English, the other Germans, when called to pray, prayed in German.

A nephew of Samuel's, Jerome (D.J. or Dan) said Samuel was a strong and forceful man, and he related this incident. It was the habit of some of the young men not to come into the church for the evening service but to hang around outside waiting for the service to end when they would walk their favorite girl friends home. Sometimes, they became a little noisy. Once when Samuel had dozed off, he awoke to hear the minister say, "and go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in." At once, he arose and went out. Shortly after he returned escorting an embarrassed group of young men to seats in the church.

In the U.S. 1850 Census, he and his wife are listed and the following children: Henry B., age 15; William H., 13; Samuel R., 8; Thomas J., 5; Jeremiah A., 3; and Charles B., 4 months. *Of course not reflected are the following Three (3) children: Mary (died as a child) & Two (2) latter-borne children: James Shaner and Ann Shaner.
