Former longtime Mexia community leader Stacey Kinney Westmoreland Carrington died Thursday in a Temple hospital. She had moved to Temple to the Meridian Retirement Community in 2001.
Stacey Kinney Westmoreland was born on Sept. 22, 1916, to Jessie Marion Westmoreland and Roy Pitt Westmoreland in Paint Rock, Texas. She grew up on the family farm on the banks of the Concho River with her brother Roy, and sister, Ilene. The family later moved to a family farm in Onaville in Bell County, and then moved to Mexia during the Oil Boom of the 1920s.
Stacey attended Mexia Public Schools, graduated from Baylor University where she was a Baylor Beauty, and also Miss Texas. She then returned to Mexia and taught school.
In December of 1944, she was married to William Lytle Carrington, a medical doctor and Captain in the Army Medical Corps. Dr. Carrington had returned to Mexia to practice medicine, following his tour of duty in India during World War II. The Carringtons were the parents of four children.
Mrs. Carrington was a leader in this community, serving as President of the Friday Club and PTO. She was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Mexia, where she was an ordained Elder and served as Treasurer of the Memorial Fund for many years, as well as serving as Moderator of the Women's Circles of the church.
Mrs. Carrington was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother.
