Well Known Man Succumbs At Hospital Following Brief Illness
Jerome H. Biddle, for many years a resident of Gilboa township, died at the home hospital in Lafayette Tuesday where he had been removed four weeks ago for treatment. Although his condition was considered serious from the first, his death came as a shock to members of his family and many friends.
Mr. Biddle was one of the early settlers of Gilboa township where he resided until a few years ago when he moved to Remington. He held a place of high esteem in the community, his public spiritedness, his broadmindedness and his ability to share with his associates their joys and their sorrow won him unnumbered friends. He will be greatly missed. Mr. Biddle was purely American both by his ancestors and by his life. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Union army. His company saw service in the Spring of 1862. Later one he joined Company K, of the 7th Kentucky Cavalry. He was soon appointed First Corporal of his Company and often served as Sergeant while on the firing line. His company never made a move, but what he was with it. On Aug. 29, 1862, he was captured with a number of his comrades. There were held as prisoner for three days then paroled and set home. He did not enlist again owing to family affairs, but often lamented that he did not do more for his country ad the old flag he loved so well.
In the spring of 1865 he went to Waynetown, Ind., and farmed with a cousin. During his spare time he studied under a private teacher and he finally qualified as a teacher. In the fall of 1866 he was 21 years of age and soon thereafter he joined the Free masons, feeling that every young man starting in life should belong to some good fraternity.
On January 17, 1869 he was united in marriage to Lydia J., daughter of Daniel Merrell, a farmer near Waynestown, Ind. In March 1870 they moved to Benton County and rented a farm in Gilboa Township. They lived on this farm for three years, then in 1872 Mr. Biddle purchased the farm which he owned at the time of his death. It was here that Mr. and Mrs. Biddle established their home. In this home two children were born, a daughter, who died in infancy and a son, Daniel W., who at the present time resides on a farm in Benton County.
While Mr. and Mrs. Biddle were greatly attached to their home life they were also very public spirited. Every new movement for the public welfare in general found Mr. Biddle not only an ardent advocate but most generally its leader. It may be said that Mr. Biddle was a pioneer in many different lines, a man of extraordinary ability, energy and courage.
Mr. Biddle was one of the promoters of the Remington Farmers Mutual insurance Association; was its first president, and served in that capacity for six years. His wise executive ability and untiring energy were what made this company a success. The -- rural mail route out of Remington was the fruit of Mr. Biddle's effort ---. The first farmer's telephone -- his . His s -- haneles of -- board of Fountain Park Chautauqua.-----
He has always been a staunch worker in the church was always considerate of the religious views of others -----.
