Ernest Thurman Atkins, born October 12, 1915, Whiteville, NC, son of William Henry Atkins and Annie Lee Russ, enlisted 28 Jan 1943, Fort Bragg, NC. US Army, PFC, 34665141 members of Troop A, 43rd Calvary Rec Sq. He accidentally drowned in Lake Waccamaw on July
15, 1945. He was married to Clara Cecil Bowen and had a son, John William Atkins, born December 9, 1935, in Whiteville, NC. Ernest was buried at Union Valley Baptist Church Cemetery, Whiteville, NC. News Reporter reflected accepted US Army 1 Feb 1943 (p1, c3)
