Listed in 1860 Georgia Census Index, Rabun County, Cherokee District, Georgia, Page 559-560. His age 29 years.

(Twins Gus and Jeff were not listed so must have not been born the day the census worker was there. Both twins are listed in the 1870 Census - Solomon died in 1864- showing their age as 9 years along with another child, Eliza L. age 5.)

Solomon contracted malaria while serving in the Civil War at Charleston, South Carolina as a private. He was home on leave when he died. Solomon Nichols served in Capt. Matthews' Company, Heavy Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers (formerly Bonneau's Co. Artillary); finally paroled as (3rd) Company C, Manigault's Battalion, South Carolina Artillery.
