Solomon contracted malaria while serving in the Civil War at Charleston, South Carolina as a private. He was home on leave when he died. Solomon Nichols served in Capt. Matthews' Company, Heavy Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers (formerly Bonneau's Co. Artillary); finally paroled as (3rd) Company C, Manigault's Battalion, South Carolina Artillery.
