Pauline Cecilia Mahan Dahlgren, 91, passed away in the early morning of March 4, 2016. She was born October 15, 1924 in Mars Hill, the only daughter of James and Susan Mahan.
She grew up on her family's potato farms, first on Mouse Island, then in East Blaine. She graduated from Aroostook Central Institute in 1943. She married Edward Dahlgren on June 12, 1948. Pauline's family meant everything to her, and she was the center from which they revolved. She was the proud mother of five children, grandmother of seven, and great-grandmother of two. She was proud of all their accomplishments and kept newspaper clippings and photographs for decades. Pauline could be found at every school performance and game, running taxi to and from practices. Every dinner to her was Thanksgiving; she loved cooking and baking. Her donuts and sour cream chocolate cake were legendary. She never met a sweet, or an episode ofThe Young and the Restless, she didn't like. Pauline was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mars Hill. John F. Kennedy was her favorite president because of his Irish-Catholic background and his election sparked an enduring love of politics. People often remarked her house on Route One was "Democratic headquarters" due to the number of signs that spanned from one end of the yard to the other. Pauline and Edward attended the inauguration of Bill Clinton in Washington, DC, and they were able to go on some other memorable trips together, including to Los Angeles and Hawaii. They were married 57 years before his death. Pauline was a feisty, headstrong Irish woman who lived life on her own terms. Her strength, love, and outspokenness will be remembered and cherished forever.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: daughters Susan and Greg Daigneault and Judith and Dale Johnston; sons Garold "Chick" Mahan, Brian Dahlgren, and Michael and Micheline Dahlgren; her grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah, Heather, Valerie, Erik, Amanda, and Thomas; great-grandchildren Andrew and Emma; brother and sister-in-law Louis and Anne Mahan; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; helpful friend Bob Mosher.
Pauline was predeceased by her husband, Edward; her parents; her son, Edward, Jr.; brothers, James, Malcolm, and Clarence; and special sister-in-law, Annie.
