MRS. NANCY J. MOORE

Mrs. Nancy J. Moore, one of the pioneer residents of this city, passed away at her home here on Thursday morning, July 26, 1906, after an extended illness with dropsy and a complication of diseases. Although she had been a great sufferer, her death was peaceful and the end came without a struggle.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. N. Evans, were held at the M. E. church on Friday afternoon at four o'clock, after which the remains were gently laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery.

Nancy Jane Mitchell, daughter of Joseph and Eliza Frances Mitchell, was born in Monroe county, Indiana on December 8, 1833. In the fall of 1852 she came with her parents to this county and located on what is now the county farm. About three years later the family moved to Chariton, where she has since resided.

Soon after coming to Chariton she was employed as a teacher in the public schools and filled that position for eight or ten years. She taught about the same number of years in the country schools.

On December 24, 1870, she was married to Delavan H. Moore. To them were born four children, Anna, who is now Mrs. A. L. Howard, of Leon, Susie, who died at the age of two and a half years, Mary and Louise. The latter made her home with her mother until her death and tenderly cared for her during her protracted illness.

In early girlhood deceased was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful member of that organization until her death. For a number of years she was church organist and a teacher in the Sunday School.

She was highly esteemed by all who knew her for her many lovable characteristics, and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. For many years she conducted a greenhouse and in all her dealings was conscientious and upright.

Her death will be mourned by all who knew her. The sorrowing children have the sympathy of the entire community in their great bereavement.
