Civil War Union Army Officer. Colonel of 25th Missouri and commander of 1st brigade, Prentiss' 6th Division Army of Tennessee. From an advanced camp along Corinth Road 4/6/1862, Col. Peabody sent out a recon party pre-dawn which discovered advancing Confederates near Seay's and Fraley's fields and 1st warned Union forces of incumbent attack. From this same camp, Peabody established a second defensive line, in center Union position which slowed Confederate advance and allowed his Division commander, Col. Benjamin Prentiss time to establish a third rearward defensive line along the sunken road which ultimately became known as the Hornet's nest. During his forward defense Peabody was wounded four times, as he reined before his tent a fifth wound killed him.
