Wood Bloxom

A retired teacher, Wood Bloxom, 929 Oak St., died Friday evening at the Regency Health Care Center in Halstead. He lived in Emporia since 1931, moving here from Eureka, and he taught mathematics in Emporia schools until his retirement in 1967. He was a member and past master of Emporia Lodge 12, A.F. & A.M., and was a member of the Masonic York Rite bodies and the Retired Teachers Association. He formerly held memberships in the National Education Association, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Kansas Checkers Association.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:30 P.M. in the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Don W. Frogge in charge. A graveside service in Memorial Lawn Cemetery will be conducted by members of the Emporia Masonic Lodge. Memorial contributions for the church may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Wood Bloxom was the son of the the late L. Frank and Mollie Jarboe Bloxom. He was born April 23, 1899, in Pratt County, Kan. He married Charlotte Ann Kunz on Aug. 14, 1927, in Emporia, and she died Aug. 24, 1893. Survivors include one son, Gene Bloxom, 1025 West St.; one daughter, Josephine Scharff of Halstead; two brothers, Walter Bloxom of Pratt and Fred Bloxom of Medicine Lodge; one sister, Grace Banbury of Wichita; two granddaughters, Gena Brown and Ann Pruitt, and one-great-grandson. Two brothers, B. and Roy Bloxom died earlier.

Mr. Bloxom, who received both bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas University, taught mathematics for 43 years. He was a teacher at Glendale Rural High School in Pratt County, at Burlingame High School and at Eureka High School before coming to Emporia. He taught at both Emporia High School and Lowther Junior High School here.

He was named "Man of the Week" in The Gazette in Nov. 17, 1959, as one "typical of the many thousands of American men and women who devote their lives to teaching.... Mr. Bloxom is well respected by his students, both present and former, and in turn, they are respected by him."
