Staff Sergeant Wesley H. Anderson, born in 1922, was the son of Grace R. (Olson) Anderson Zinke from Grafton, Walsh County, North Dakota. Grafton is in far northeastern North Dakota 41 miles north northwest of Grand Forks.

In the 1930 census 8-year-old Wesley is living with his mother and maternal grandfather Olrick Olson in the household of his maternal uncle Lloyd R. Olson at 3017 Oakland Ave., in Minneapolis, MN. His uncle is a traveling salesman for a clothing company. His mother works polishing heat regulators. In the 1940 census 18-year-old Wesley is living with his mother and step father William Zinke at 1206 Hill Ave., in Grafton. His step-father is a waiter in a café. His mother is the cook, and Wesley is a part-time “helper”.Wesley enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard 10 Feb 1941 at Grafton, North Dakota. He’d had 4 years of high school and was single without dependents. He was assigned to the 164th Infantry Regiment of the ND National Guard which became part of the 23rd Infantry Division.The 23rd Infantry Division was known as the Americal Division. It got its name because it was the first US Division to reach New Caledonia to cut off the Japanese advance toward Australia. On 8 Jan 1945, the Division began movement to Leyte and Samar, to take part in cleaning out remaining Japanese forces on those islands, and to invade Biri, Capul, Ticao, and Burias.
