His parents were Joseph Franklin Whitten and Flora Maude (Benson) Whitten. His wife was Irma Vera (Booker) Whitten.

Whitten was the flight engineer on B-24J #44-40588, assigned to the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 493rd Bombardment Squadron. They were part of a five plane formation that departed Pandaveswar India to bomb targets at Moulmein Burma. Five minutes after dropping their bombs the formation was jumped by eight to twelve Japanese fighters. On about the third or fourth pass the bomber's #2 engine caught fire. The pilot shut down the engine, the fire went out and they made a diving left turn into clouds. They were not seen again.

Because his body was not recovered, he is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing.

Whitten received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

He is also memorialized in Riverside Cemetery in Springvale Maine.
