George LeRoy Harbberts (1917 Illinois) a resident of Tazewell County, Illinois, enlisted as a Private (S/N 16017954) in the Coast Artillery Corps, U. S. Army on 14 Feb 1941 in Peoria, Illinois. He was single and had completed 2 years of high school. George was described as 5'8 1/4" in height and 133 lbs.
Private George Harbberts was sent to the Philippines and assigned to Battery "A" 60th Coast Artillery Corps. The 60th Coast Artillery (AA) was part of USAFFE's Harbor Defenses of Manila and Subic Bays. This anti-aircraft unit was to provide defense over Manila Bay and the southern tip of the Bataan Peninsula. The 60th was equipped with 3-inch guns,37mm guns, .50-caliber machine guns, ans 60-inch Sperry searchlights.
"A" Battery (Albany),60th CA was equipped with nine Sperry mobile searchlights, nine sound locators, and two SCR-268 Searchlight radars at various locations on Corregidor. One 60 inch searchlight on Fort Drum and manned by a detail from Battery A throughout the siege. George was on Corregidor.
He was captured by the Japanese when Corregidor surrendered on 6 May 1942. He was taken along with 6000 other Corregidor POW'S to Cabanatuan Prison Camp No. 3.
Pvt. George L Harbberts, of "A" Battery, 60th Coastal Artillery Corps, U.S. Army died of Dysentery, Malaria, and Beri-beri on 26 Sept 1942.
Private George L Harbberts was buried in the Cabanatuan prison cemeter - grave #65. The cemetery at Camp #3 was about 100 yards west from the northwest corner of the camp. All graved, head west. The graves were marked with a bottle at the head of the grave. The bottle contained his death certificate.
After the war his remains were brought to 7747 USAF Cemetery in Manila #2, Philippine Islands - Block 3 Row 22 grave 2774 (D-D 6443). The deceased in Manila #2 (over 11,000 American soldiers) rested there until their removal to the American Graves Registration Service Manila Mausoleum in the summer of 1948. From there, according to the wished of his next of kin (father, John F Harbberts), Private George LeRoy Harbberts was buried in his final resting place in the 7701 Ft. McKinley Cemetery ( now know as the Manila American Cemetery) plot L row 2 grave 92.
All together 2729 prisioners died int the Cabanatuan POW Camp systern itn the 2 1/2 years it ws open.
