He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 21, 1941, prior to the war, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Shipping and receiving clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24D #42-40934 took off, with a crew of 10, from Jackson Drome (APO #929), Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a bombing mission over Rabaul, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.
They were last sighted by 2nd Lt. Harold G. Thompson entering into a weather front that was appx. 40 miles off Kiriwina Island, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea on the way to the target. It was later found out that they crashed into a reef near the Amphlett Islands during the war. The entire crew was lost in this crash.
Royal was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Royal also has a "Centaph" in the Saint Pauls Blue Church Cemetery, Coopersburg, Pennsylvania.
