S1c Robert Henry Kallansrud was lost (Missing in Action, Killed in Action, Remains not Recovered) in the sinking of the USS Helena (CL-50) on 6 July 1943 during the Battle of Kula Gulf, off the coast of Kolombangara in the Solomon Islands. According to family account he died in the forward turret of USS Helena when the ship went down.

S1c Kallansrud is remembered on the Tablets Of The Missing at the Manila American Cemetery, Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines.
