According to the 3rd Battalion diaries for 8 Oct 1916, he was involved with an attack from Regina Trench which was not very successful. In total 13 of 14 Officers were killed or wounded and 396 of 481 soldiers were killed or wounded. Herbert's body was not recovered from the battle field.
