My Great Uncle Walter was always missed. My Grandmother raised his two older sons after he was killed in WWII, one is still living and Walter has grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pvt. U.S. Army, World War II-Pvt. Wyss was killed in action on 12-10-1944 while serving as a Rifleman with the 101st Infantry Regiment of the 26th Infantry Division. This Division landed at Cherbourg and Utah Beach on September 7, 1944, and relieved the 4th Armored Division on October 7, 1944, and maintained a defensive position in the Salonnes-Montcourt area.

He is the son of Mr. Jacob Wyss who died in 1940, and Mrs. Mary Wyss of 1601 West Lake Street in Peoria, Illinois, and the husband of Mrs. Martha {Schaer} Wyss of Peoria, and the father of three sons, David, 12, Douglas, 10, Paul, 16 months, and one daughter, Miss Sandra, 9, who lives with her mother, Mrs. Ralph Anderson. He also leaves four brothers, George of Peoria, Edward of Morton, Illinois, John of Brimfield, Illinois, and William, and four sisters, Mrs. Ray Beer, Mrs. Max Perdelwitz of Oakville, Iowa, Mrs. Fred Wieland of Peoria, and Mrs. George Asal of Monica, Illinois.

Pvt. Wyss was working at the Altorfer Brothers Co. of Peoria when he was drafted on June 16, 1943, and was overseas as a replacement in October of 1944.

Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, American Campaign Medal, European Campaign Medal with One Battle Star, Army Good Conduct Medal.
