Joseph served as a Private, 262nd Infantry Regiment, 66th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Cumberland County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on May 1, 1944 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. He was noted as being employed as a Driver and also as Married.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" when the S.S. Léopoldville, on which he was a passenger, was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine U-486 while sailing between Southampton and Cherbourg during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Approximately 763 soldiers were killed in this attack along with 56 crew members of the Léopoldville.
