John Silas CHEEK, the son of George and Minerva CHEEK, was born on February 15, 1891 in Canton, Illinois and passed away on December 05, 1971 in the Routt County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
On March 08, 1916 he and Ina Marie LENZ were united in marriage in Galesburg, Illinois. Four children were born to this union, Russell, who now lives at Bushnell, Illinois, Merle and George who make their home in Steamboat Springs; and Alice who resides at Seattle, Washington.
The family lived on a farm near Prairie City, Illinois until March of 1927, when they moved to the ranch on South Side here in Routt County where they made their home until they moved into Steamboat Springs in 1963.
In addition to his wife, sons and daughter, John is survived by his sister, Mrs. May SMICK pf Canton, Illinois, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A sister, Lizzie MANNON, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 09, 1971, at 2:00 p.m. at the Root Mortuary Chapel. Reverend Richard OGDEN officiated. Mary BARBER and a grandson George W. CHEEK sang "Beyond the Sunset," and "Abide with Me" accompanied by Romaine Mahaffey. Casket bearers included Clifford MORE, Pete STANKO, Lewis KEMRY Alva THOMPSON, R. S. PAGETT and Keith SELBE. Interment was in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery.
