William Clarke was the fourth child of A.H. Clarke (Virginia) and Gladys Adele Bleeze-Clarke (Illinois). He was born in Utah, but moved to Baltimore MD at a very young age.

Seaman Second Class William Russell Clarke, born in Utah in 1899, was the son of Albert H Clarke and Gladys Adele (Bleeze) Clarke Ranney of Baltimore Maryland.
William was aboard the S.S. Florence H on the night of April 17, 1918, when loaded with explosives it likely hit a mine, blew up, and sank in Quiberon Bay, France, just northwest of Saint Nazaire.

Clark Not Found After Explosion on his Ship – Mrs. Gladys Ranney, 821 South Second street, Highlandtown, has been notified by the Navy Department that her son, William R. Clark, 19 years old, is reported missing, following the explosion which wrecked the American steamer Florence H. Young Clark, who is a gun pointer on the ship, enlisted in the navy eight months ago. He is not among the survivors of the ship, recently landed at a French port. Mrs. Ranney still feels that her son will be heard from.
