In 1900 Charles Abbott enlisted in the West Australian 2nd Mounted Infantry Contingent and served in the Boer War in South Africa. On the 12th of November 1902 Charles married Grace Williams in Perth. Sadly their first child Leo died at 15 months old on the 1st May 1905. Tragedy again struck the family when on 2nd April 1907 Grace's father, Harry Williams, drowned whilst swimming in the notorious blue hole at Triggs Beach. Harry was well known in Perth public life and owned many properties and business's in Perth. Two more sons were born to Charles and Grace, Rosslind in 1905 and Mervyn in 1909. On the 15th of January 1915 a daughter, named Grace Mary, was born. However sadly the next day her mother, Charles's wife, Grace died. Tragedy for Charles again struck just 6 weeks later when on the 3rd of March 1915, his infant daughter Grace Mary also died. On the 16th of August 1915 Charles enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, 11th Infantry Battalion, to serve in World War One. He arrived in Tel-El-Kebir, Egypt, on the 8th of January 1916. From Egypt he moved to the Western Front in France on the 5th of April 1916, but sadly on the 30th of May 1916 he was killed in action near Armentieres, France. Charles's two sons as well as being cared for by their grandmother Annie Williams, who died in 1918, boarded and were educated at the Benedictine Monastery in New Norcia, Western Australia.
