From the Vital Records of Gorham, Harrison & Pownal, Maine;
"In the summer of 1792, James Watson, John Carsley 3rd & his brother, Nathan, went together into the wilderness that is now Harrison, ME, and staked out claims on Maple Road. They built crude sugar camps for making maple syrup & sugar the next spring & also built a log cabin on John's claim, where tradition says that he spent the winter alone, becoming the first settler of Harrison.

John married Martha (Crockett) April 16, 1790, at Gorham, Maine. Their 7 children were:
Ebenezer, Sarah, Rachael, Fanny, Mercy, Freeman & Daniel Carsley (twins).

After his wife Martha died, John returned to Harrison, ME, & lived there until he died. Records don't say when he returned or where he lived there, probably with his brother, Nathan. His tombstone, in the Free Will Baptist Cemetery, now known as the Maple Ridge Cemetery, bears the inscription, "First Settler of Harrison".

John III was one of 11 children born to John Carsley II & Mercy (Freeman) and the grandson of John Carsley I and Dorcas (Hamblin).
