Harold A. Nelson served with the 2047th Engineer Aviation Fire Fighting Platoon during World War II. He died at Advance Landing Ground A-71, Chastres, France when a returning plane crashed and burst into flames. Two of the plane's crew members were rescued. While attempting to rescue the third, Harold and several members of his platoon were killed (the plane's bombs detonated). The Fraser-Nelson American Legion Post in Pine River is named for Harold and his friend, Richard Fraser (USN -- he was lost with his ship in the Asiatic, March 1942). Both men grew up in the Pine River, Minnesota area.
