Dorothy Mayers Warthaw, the younger to three siblings was born to John and Ella (Eleazer) Mayers on April 6, 1922 in Chapin, South Carolina. The Mayers family migrated to New Smyrna Beach, FL where Dorothy grew up and attended local schools. She was a scholar student at Chisholm High School who was especially fond of math and immersed herself in reading and poetry.

At an early age, Dorothy professed a belief in Christ and became a very active member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Dorothy was married at a young age to Levan Warthaw, who preceded her in death. Three children were born to the union, Carol, Gloria and Levan, Jr. She was a role model for her children and "walked the talk" to demonstrate the value of hard work and education. While working full time as a domestic worker and raising her children, she returned to Chisholm High to earn her diploma. Dorothy knew the value of an education and after graduating from high school immediately enrolled at Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, where she earned her degree with high honors.

Dorothy worked in the Volusia County school system as a classroom teacher, a VIS instructor and after earning more college credits she became a social worker for the school system. Dorothy enjoyed her work and the interaction with parents and students. After 35 years of service, Dorothy retired from the school system in 1991.

As a strong dedicated Christian, Dorothy continued her faith-filled journey as a member of Allen Chapel, serving as chief steward and as an annual conference delegate. For many years she served as local and district-wide superintendent of Sunday Schools. Her leadership in organizing Vacation Bible School (VBS) was an annual event that grew into all local churches in the community participating at Allen Chapel's VBS.

Dorothy spear headed the first Thanksgiving dinners that were prepared and freely distributed throughout the community. She has been recognized for her service by her church family as well as the school system she toiled for so faithfully.

Dorothy was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. She enjoyed traveling throughout the continental U.S. and the Caribbean with her family and friends. Baking pound cakes and sharing them with friends was one of her favorite past times. Christmas time ws her happiest moments when she looked forward to having all her children, grand and great-grands return home to celebrate with the Warthaw matriarch. The noise, food and laughter filer her home and heart with joy!

As Dorothy's health began to fail, she relocated to North Carolina to live with her granddaughter, Chan and husband Daryl. She loved the lively household of children voices and scheduled road trip the family would take; there was never a dull moment.

Dorothy Mayers Warthaw was greeted by angels on April 1, 2010 surrounded by members of her family in Raleigh, North Carolina.
