Roosevelt Holloman devoted himself to helping others learn

Winter Park residents will remember Roosevelt "Big Holly" Holloman as an educator with a big voice and an even bigger heart. He dedicated his life to helping those around him learn.
Holloman died Sunday at the age of 73.
A native Floridian, Holloman was born in Winter Park in 1936 and graduated from Hungerford High School. After obtaining a degree in mathematics from Florida A&M University he joined the U.S. Air Force.
After his tour of duty, Holloman returned to Central Florida and earned a master's degree in education from Rollins College. While at Rollins, Holloman met and married Carol Warthaw. Together they raised a family of two girls and two boys.
For the next 30 years, Holloman taught mathematics at Hungerford and at Maitland Junior High School. He went on to become assistant principal at several Orange County public schools.
"Dad was very hands-on, and was never hiding back in his office," said his daughter Michelle Holloman of Orlando. "He knew his students, and they knew him."
Holloman took the progress of his students very seriously and wanted them to get the best out of life.
"Dad wanted his students to understand that there were consequences and for them to excel, they needed to look down the road," Michelle Holloman said.
After the death of his wife Carol and throughout his retirement, Holloman continued to encourage the people around him. A lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church of Winter Park, Holloman spoke to many people about faith and acted as a spiritual mentor to them.
Holloman also had an artistic side, taking up drawing in his retirement. He often depicted Biblical scenes and then gave the artwork to congregation members. His other area of interest was flowers, which he also captured in his art. He was especially interested in birds of paradise.
Michelle Holloman describes her father as a gentle giant who encouraged people to be their very best.
Holloman is also survived by sons Roosevelt "Holly" Holloman III of Orlando and Todd "Tynee" Holloman of New Smyrna Beach; daughter Darcia Harris of Ormond Beach; his sister Mae Rose Steward of Winter Park; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
