Tryon was the 4th child out of 6, born to Charles L. Smith and Willie Wesson. He married Jeanne Keister in 1929 and they lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the manager of Rose Hill Memorial Park when he entered the service in late 1943. He and his wife had no children.

He is remembered fondly by his nephews whom he often treated to tickets to the movies or to sporting events when they came to town from Shawnee. He had a terrific sense of humor, as did his nephews. He started balding at a very early age. When he turned 30, he said he felt like he finally looked his age!

He was killed in the vicinity of Mussolini Canal, south of Isola Bella, struck by shell fragments.
