B-24J #42-51837 took off, with a crew of 10, from Cerignola, Italy on a bombing mission over Linz, Austria. During a successful bombing run they developed engine trouble possibly from anti-aircraft fire. While returning to base they developed more engine trouble and ended up ditching off the coast of Italy in the Gulf of Manfredonia. Only two crew members survived the ditching.
Raymond was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
