Pvt Marcus Ewing Chamblee, son of Charlie N and Ida Bell Chamblee, born 1924, entered service on May 12, 1943, took his US Army basic training at Camp Shelby, sailed via Fort Meade, MD on November 1, 1943 to North Africa. From there sailed to Italy as part of the 141 Infantry 36 Division (service #34631122), where he encountered heavy enemy fire while establishing a bridgehead on the Rapido River and failed to return. Reported missing in action, declared dead while missing on January 22, 1944. He was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He is memorialized at Tablets of the Missing at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Nettuno, Italy, an American Battle Monuments Commission location.
