Inducted into the army from Florida. A 2nd Lt. fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was killed while on a bombing mission on April 15, 1944 when his airplane crashed off the Italian coast. The crash was caused by engine failure at low altitude.

An artilleryman at Culver for four years, Lt. Beason entered the service at Ft. Bragg in March 1941, transferring to the Air Service in 1943. Active in cadet affairs at the Academy, Beason held the cadet commission of lieutenant and was aide to the Superintendent at the time of his graduation.

He was a member of the 523rd Squadron of the 27th Fighter-Bomber Group, part of the 12th U.S. Army Air Force. In April 1944, the Group was based at Castel Volturno, Italy. Lt Beason went missing in action on April 15, 1944, when his aircraft, P-40L 42-10518, ditched in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Italy.

His father, Ross Hamilton Beason Sr, established a memorial park in his wife's honor in NE Pulaski County, Indiana and is administered by the Culver Educational Foundation, of which Ross was a director. The park was dedicated on November 14, 1959. The park includes a guest house, a dormitory and a dining and recreation building, dedicated to their son and named The Ross Beason Jr. Memorial Hall.

Second Lieutenant Ross Hamilton Beason Jr, Army serial number 0-443185, was born at Salt Lake City, Utah on November 15, 1921. His parents were Ross Hamilton Beason Sr (1887 - 1964) and Elvera Wilhelmina (Bong) Beason (1890 - 1948). He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1939, and attended Washington and Lee and Kenyon colleges. He entered the service at Sarasota County, Florida. He married Dorothy Louise Darwin on December 12, 1942, and had a son, Ross Beason III.

He was a member of the 523rd Squadron of the 27th Fighter-Bomber Group, part of the 12th U.S. Army Air Force. In April 1944, the Group was based at Castel Volturno, Italy. The Meditation Chapel at Memory Grove Park was a gift from his parents to the City of Salt Lake. It was erected to the memory of Lt Beason and other sons of Utah who were killed in the war.

Lt Beason is also memorialized on the Wall of the Missing at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery near Anzio, Italy.
