He was in the 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, in the U. S. Army Air Forces. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Silver Star, and Air Medal.
He was a member of the oldest Thunderbolt fighter group in England.

"Captain James Willard Wilkinson, 28 year old ace fighter pilot and holder of the Distingquished Flying Cross and the Air Medal, has been killed in action over the European theater, according to a Ward Department announcement. His parents live in Swarthmore.
He had completed more than a dozen missions over Europe and downed his fifth Nazi plane several months ago.
An advertising and news writer in civilian life, Captain Wilkinson joined the Canadian Field Artillery in September of 1939, remaining until he transferred to the R. A. F. in October of 1941. He joined the U. S. Army Air Forces in November of 1942.
A graduate of Germantown Academy, Captain Wilkinson attended Princeton University prior to his entry into the service."
